How does ChatGPT decide which products to show?
ChatGPT shows a product when it fits what someone is looking for, and relies in part on structured product data from your own site and from other providers. According to OpenAI, product results are not ads and you cannot pay for a spot.
What OpenAI says
- ChatGPT shows products it considers relevant to the question, looking at factors such as price and reviews.
- It uses structured product data from the store itself and from other providers, plus other information from the web.
- Titles and descriptions may be shortened or rewritten, because every store writes them differently.
- When several stores sell the same product, availability, price, quality and whether the store is the maker or main seller all play a part.
- Review summaries are generated by the model from public websites and are not verified by OpenAI.
How your products get into ChatGPT
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt. OpenAI says sites that block this bot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Read how to allow search bots and block training bots.
- Shopify stores are included through the Shopify Catalog, according to OpenAI, with no extra work.
- Other stores can apply to OpenAI to submit a product feed directly.
What you can do yourself
These steps help with more than ChatGPT: Google, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude read the same pages.
- Provide complete product data (JSON-LD) with price, currency, stock, brand and barcode (GTIN/EAN). Read how to check it.
- Write a description with concrete facts: size, weight, material, capacity. An assistant comparing two products needs those details.
- Make sure the price in your product data matches the price on the page.
- Collect reviews and include them in your product data.
No guarantee. Whether ChatGPT shows your product is up to OpenAI. What you can do is make your page easy to read and make sure you are not blocked by accident.
